Yes, Obito was a loser or an avarage chunin at best. Compared to a genius ninjas as Kakashi or Itachi he is nothing. He was important to the story because of his personality, not the combat skills.

IF Madara picked Obito’s body, why did he pick it?
Maybe he was the only Uchiha with a sharingan at the time. Every Uchiha is capable of activating the sharingan, but i was under the impression that few actually did. Didn’t they make a big deal when Itachi got it? So maybe as soon as Madara detected another sharingan, he went for it. I may be mistaken on my sharingan mythology here so jump all over it if I’m wrong lol.
On the Obito’s body being crushed, after looking at the pictures again I’m even more convinced his eye was alright. For one thing he actually says ALMOST crushed, not totall crushed. As for his right eye, look at the picture man. There is a FLAT rock surface just barely covering his right eye. Unless there’s a single random spike over his eye we don’t see, it didn’t crush it. Otherwise, short of crushing his whole skull, the eye wouldn’t be damaged since its IN his skull.
Finally, Pein’s face was hidden for so long cuz he ended up having 6 faces on 6 bodies, one of which was Jiraiya’s former pupil. Kind of unusual and hence a big deal. Also, another blast from a character’s past.
